Ian's nieuwsbrief augustus 2010 |

5th August 2010
I got to see, and jam with my old friend Chick Willis a couple of weeks ago. Chick is the cousin of Chuck Willis who wrote the Ray Charles classic 'Feel So Bad', and he was in town for the Birmingham International Jazz Festival. Chris Lomas from Parker's Alibi was playing bass for him, and he gave me a call to let me know what was going down, so I went along with a telecaster for a jam. It was so nice to see Chick again. His stories are hilarious, and the music was completely free and spontaneous which is always interesting!
My good mate Morg Morgan is retiring from full time playing to become a music teacher. I'm sure he'll do really well in his new career given his varied life experience and musical ability. I'll definitely miss having 'The Mole' around, but I still intend to play duo shows with him from time to time, so there's a chance you'll get to hear him again at some point.
I've been busy this last couple of weeks in rehearsals with the band for our tour later in the year. The band is sounding great and it's really nice to play in that format again after all these months. My long time rhythm section of Steve Amadeo and Wayne Proctor are of course still around, and Chris Eaton, who many of you (in the UK at least) will have heard in my acoustic trio, has now joined on a permanent basis. I'm really enjoying playing with another guitarist, and he's a mind blowing player. The world famous Mick the Dog filmed the first rehearsals last week, and I'll get together with him over the next few days to put the footage together to give you a taster of how things are coming together.
I'll also be taking the duo with Wayne to Germany in November which will be cool. We had a great time on our Benelux tour in June, and the audience response was overwhelming considering the show only involves the two of us, so it will be nice to tour it again. I've missed being in Germany, it's been a while. Please check out the tour page for details.
Alternatively, the independently run German fansite (www.ianparkermusic.de.tl) will have lots of information on the tour over the coming weeks.
I've been in the studio for the last few days recording two new songs. I'm very happy with the way it's working out, and there'll be more on that soon no doubt. I've got more than enough material for a new album, and I can't wait to get it all down...

Hi there friends,
I just wanted to say a quick hello to you guys following my recent tour. It was really nice to be back in The Netherlands, as I’ve missed spending time in your country and playing for you over the last twelve months.
This last tour started in Spijkerboor for the Roots on the Road Festival. It was only the second duo show I had done with Wayne Proctor (the first being the previous night in London opening for Jimmie Vaughan), so we were a bit nervous. However, the warm response of the audience put us at ease immediately. In fact by the end of the night, we were quite overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the people there.
The following afternoon we were in Amsterdam playing live on national radio at the Tros Muziek Café which is an amazingly cool show. I wish we had a show like that in the UK. Such a diverse selection of live music performed by signed and unsigned acts every Saturday afternoon – cool concept, very Dutch! That night we were at The Highlands Festival, where my good friend Henk Hak had invited us to play in the VIP tent, which was great fun. It was nice to see Henk again, and I also got to hang out with Walter Trout and his band after the show, which was great, as I’ve not seen those guys for a few years.
On Sunday we were back up north in Assen at De Witte Bal. Wayne and I both felt that the connection with the audience was actually greater that night than on any other occasion at that venue, and we’ve had some great times there over the years. It just seemed that the audience really hung on every word and note this time around, which was very satisfying for us.
On Monday night we played three songs on KX Radio in Amsterdam. The hosts Mijke and Sander have a really relaxed vibe which made the interview and music feel very honest and real which I enjoyed very much. If you guys don’t know about the station you should check it out. It is kind of an alternative to the mainstream corporate stations, and they have the freedom to play whatever the hell they want to – very cool!
The final show was in Geldermalsen, where my good friends Gillian and Barend had organised an event in aid of the ‘Relay for Life’ cancer charity. Relay for Life involves a round the clock fundraising run this weekend in Geldermalsen, and our concert was intended to help raise awareness. It was a really special night, with a very intimate atmosphere and a fantastically attentive audience. Thanks for having us guys!
After that we went to Belgium, which was also really cool. This duo with Wayne was the last stage of my ‘Up Close and Intimate Tour’, and I’m so pleased we got to The Netherlands with it. I’ve learned a lot from my musical experiments in the last twelve months or so, and these experiences will undoubtedly help to shape my musical future.
That said, I’m ready to play with the full band again now and I plan to return to The Netherlands with the guys in December. We’ll be working hard on the show in rehearsals over the next few months to incorporate my new songs and musical ideas into the band sound, without loosing any of the intensity we had in the past. I’ve also missed my electric guitar a bit over the last few months so I’m really looking forward to picking it up again with band! I’m excited…
